RAL Paint is our thing. It’s what we supply and we happen to be very good at it. This week we discuss the RAL Paint System, how it benefits you and its purpose throughout the painting and decorating market.
RAL in simple terms is a German colour matching system. Before the RAL colour system was introduced into the early 1900’s customers and decorators would have needed to describe paints, colours and tints to make sure they ended up with the desired tone. However, thanks to the RAL paint system, that is no longer the case.
Over the years the RAL paint colour codes have changed quite a bit. When the matching system was first introduced there was a long colour code for each colour. As time progressed, those colour codes shortened and colour matching was getting progressively easier.
Back in the day, let’s say early 1910. You want to paint a room a specific colour – but you can’t! You don’t know the DNA of the colour. You risk plastering a random colour all over your walls.
However, the introduction of the RAL paint system changed the game. It introduced the colour coding system that we utilise today to ensure that all of our decorating activities are completed using the colours we so desperately crave. Of course, you could still go straight ahead and paint without colour matching beforehand, but there wouldn’t be any surprises when you complete the task with a random colour spread across your landing.
Colour matching is actually quite an easy process. These days all you need is a small sample of your desired colour, take it along to one of the DIY stores, Homebase or B&Q is usually the best bet. One of their paint technicians will be able to use your sample to identify the exact colour within the sample.
