Bath Doctor’s Porcelain Utility Sink Refurb

Scott at Bath Doctor was tasked with repairing and repainting a porcelain utility sink in a restaurant. It was a bit of a passion project from the owner as he wanted it saved and repaired rather than replaced. For Scott, this is a piece of cake, and the results speak for themselves! Take a look at how Scott completed this project with our primer and paint below.

Materials & Tools List

Repair

The process began by repairing cracks and other damage to the sink. Scott started by sanding down the sink and any affected areas to remove enamel filler and ensure the paint adhered. A filler was added to the damaged surface and left to cure fully.

Top tip: When using filler, always apply and leave to cure. As the filler cures, you will notice the moisture dissipate and the filler shrink, meaning reapplication will be necessary once sanded. Remember, the thicker the application, the longer it’ll take to cure.

Once the filler had fully cured and Scott had sanded the surface flat with fine sandpaper, he removed the debris with tackcloths and moved on to painting.

Paint

Following the preparation stages, Scott applied multiple coats of high build primer (generally 2-4 coats is recommended) until the sink was fully covered, leaving sufficient curing time between coats (allow approximately 40 minutes on thicker coats).

In this case, the top coat needed to be strong enough to withstand abrasion and water immersion, so a 2K paint was the best option. We also added a glass adhesion to Scott’s paint to ensure it adhered to the porcelain. We always recommend applying up to 4 coats of this.

Final Results

As you can see from the photos below, the results from Scott’s repair and repaint project were outstanding, and his client loved the new lease of life it gave to his old sink. Onwards and upwards to the next project!
